I got my start during the dotcom boom and, by virtue of generally being in the right place at the right time, worked my way into a sysadmin job very quickly. After about 5 years in the pure sysadmin field, my job started focusing more and more on supporting developers and less on maintaining boxes. After a few years of that, I got a job at a large media company and worked on some really fun projects while wearing many different hats. After that, I went to work for the mothership itself – AWS, where I watched cloud computing go from a perceived niche product to the new thing that every company had to be a part of.
I’ve been working with AWS ever since EC2 was in Beta, and I’m a huge fan of configuration management (specifically Puppet) for its ability to take automation to the next level. By combining configuration management with a public and/or private cloud platform, you can create a metadata-based, event-driven infrastructure. How cool is that?
I’m also a serious geek who gets very excited about cool ideas, and I love checking out new startups in New York and New Jersey – there are some great ideas floating around out there, and startup folks are generally a lot of fun.
When I’m not doing something tech related, I’m generally spending time with family and friends.
